my main computer is existing as a server in my basement right now because I need access to the files but don't have room to set up the whole enterprise, so synching my phone is too much of a pain in the ass to be bothered. I have had a couple of those James May Toy Stories that I already watched forever ago taking up half my hard drive now for months.

I kind of crave an iPhone4. That's some serious hi-consumer-tech shit.

According to a friend, disabling the crash reports etc. speeds up the process.

This will teach me to opt-in to that kind of thing.

It took 4 hours to upgrade my iPhone 3GS and transfer it over to my wife, replacing her 3G. I've switched to a Nexus One and I've got more freedom than any one person can handle ;)

Let me know how the Nexus One goes.

Now that I have an iPad, I may let my frustration with AT&T get the better of me.

The big draw to the Nexus One for me was being able to do wifi-tethering with Android 2.2 over AT&T, without having to pay AT&T's tethering extortion. Since I have an iPad, I'll use that as the Apple-experience device and tether it to the N1 when I'm out and about. Best of both worlds!

Now I just need Google to push out the Froyo-y goodness...

I use my iPad for the Kindle store (iBooks sucks), so I don't clutter my bookshelves with business books.

Also: Netflix on my chest, note taking, sketches for websites, MIDI controller that's cheaper than buying a Lemur for $2k, and right now, the Zillow app is like living in the future. I'm getting a lot of house hunting done from my bed.

I use it for reading books (Kindle ones, agree with stilton on ibooks), playing games, controlling my tv, playing more games, reading comic books, couch browsing, watching netflix and itunes flicks.

Got two iPhone 4's today! Hooray!

I use it in meetings to quickly look up websites referenced by vendors and the like. It's much easier than lugging around a notebook or netbook.

GameCenter that Apple is putting out this fall is the fucking shit. I can't wait to write games for it, it's awesome the tools they're giving developers. You can't even imagine mutiplayer Double Solitaire achievements.

The EVO 4G doesn't do it for you? Or are you waiting for 4G to be available in your area?

I like the horizontal layout of iBooks (wish Kindle would do a 2-column layout). I use my iPad for pretty much everything I'd use a laptop for. (Surfing, reading, email, trolling forums, etc.) Planning on replacing my MBP with a quad-core 27" iMac later this year.

I hate iBooks because it tries to mimic the aesthetic of reading a book by putting in binding, shadows on the page, etc. Those are the exact reasons I hate reading real books, there are too many visually distracting things in my field of vision. Prefer the Kindle app because it is just text on the screen with minimal chrome.

Well scratch the Evo (presuming Froyo roll-out) and iPhone4 for me -- demo'd their 720p recordings and they both suffered from stuttery moments in playpack. :/

what's the advantage, though? you still have to click through shit to dig into the folders, don't you?

I haven't bothered because I only have 4 or 5 pages and most of the stuff I use regularly is on the first two.

UI navigation in Froyo is *much* smoother. Switching between screens or moving from an app back to the home screen is now as smooth as it should be. It's good stuff.

Update: IOS4 made my 3G run like absolute garbage. Apps stall and crash, typing stops for a minute then catches up like I was on IRC or something. Word on the street is that o have to nuke and rebuild but I will lose my photos and contacts and probably all my app data, some of which is actually kind of precious to me ( tons of musical ideas in my four track app for example )

Of course you can back this up to your computer with a few clicks, no?

I don't know. I hate iTunes but I never jailbroke my phone so I am kind of a babe in the woods about those possibilities, but the stuff I I've read about restoring your iPhone always says something like "you'll lose all your contacts but OH WELL!" and I just assume that would not be a common sentiment if backing stuff up was easy or intuitive.

I don't know about you, but if I were to nuke my phone, I would regain everything from my Contacts app, iPhotos, etc. I have no idea how that would work if I were running WinBlows.
