This deserves a thread of its own.

I am considering buying myself a decent watch, not having worn one in years. I am afraid, however, that I am yet another computer nerd who thinks a massive watch will make him look like a test pilot.

Tell me what I should like instead.

    That.

Nonetheless, I believe you're slightly burly/husky, right? In that case, a robust watch with a silver finish and red, blue or green detailing is going to be a fine piece of jewellery (And yes, by god, it is jewellery. It's a man bracelet). Skinny guys need not apply and should stick with cellphones in pockets. Like me.

Ensure that is has an acceptable diameter/wrist ratio. Nothing looks worse than having a shining steampunk Babbage differential machine attached to your forearm. That also ties in with the skinny guys, because there is no watch for them which has an acceptable diameter/wrist ratio, unless it's so tiny it becomes laughable. And for women.

If you are an actual test pilot, you are exempt from all of this, obviously.

You should then completely ignore my advice because I haven't been interested in watches since 1999 and seriously what the hell do I know? Pick a watch you like. :) ^_^ ;)

Invicta has made the world excited for cartoonishly gigantic watches, but from my perspective, if you are going to spend 200 bucks to buy an enormous fake russian dive watch, why not spend 400 for a GINORMOUS ACTUAL RUSSIAN DIVE WATCH.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I am currently humoring the idea of buying a skagen titanium mesh because every now and then I tone it down. It's a good choice if you are afraid to wear a watch because it's thin as skin and won't get in your way.

One thing I can't recommend is the casio waveceptor watches unless you buy one that is easier to use than the one I bought because I thought it looked tasteful because the thing was so fucking hard to use that it defies description.

I am currently wearing the bottom of the line casio calculator watch, but my tastes run pretty wide... always case by case. I will wear anything from the ultra basic timex camper (Macgyver Approved) to a totally sick blacklight watch.

My normal standard is military watches, especially russian vostoks which are awesome for featuring everything from subs and tanks to spaceships and affordable cars on their faces, and I usually put them on a nato band. my last one was bright orange.

One watch I have always wanted but can't even slightly justify the price is the chase durer special forces. the little yellow and red seconds dial has my attention and the dude from burn notice wears it, so that's cool too. I will probably eventually compromise on this by getting a stylistically same-ballpark Traser/Luminox/Marathon type watch which will have the added bonus of being mildly radioactive from the little glowing vials.

I also really want a watch with blue hands right now. It's pretty standard stuff, but I think it looks cool. Either a dressy watch like this fairly affordable Parnis or the much more rugged and usually expensive Pilot Watch, which always have cool leather and rivet bands and look good in general, but the black face kind of diminishes the sweetness of having blue hands.

oh if you want a classic black plastic digital watch that you won't have to replace for years and years (even the battery) and can take a direct hit from a nuke, get a casio g-shock. you can almost always find one on sale somewhere for less than a hundo. I like the louder colors myself, but I own a plain black one. I have had it for like 5 or 6 years now and I bought it at TJ Maxx (which means it had been sitting around in other stores for years already) and I still haven't changed the battery!

You can get nuttier by adding weird features like depth meters and atomic timekeeping and TV REMOTE CONTROLS if you want more out of life.

oh another watch I always wanted but didn't buy when it was actually available (and now it is pretty much nonexistent) is the android catapult!

I kind of dig this Android Octopus for different reasons, though.

I also own this watch which looks silly, but it was 10 bucks and the entire thing (even the band) flashes in bright rainbow colors when you press the button! Wasn't very durable, though.

I snoozed and losed a while back on a Philip Persio watch (one of the dirt cheap low quality watches you can own by the bucket load on ebay) that was notable for having a nice solar system animation on the face. any watch with an animation or light gimmick is welcome in my home. I don't own any of the porno-animation ones, but I would.

I have a standing request to my electrical engineer friend that he has no interest in fulfilling: put a chip in a 70s red LED watch that I can push a button and make it play the theme from Tron.

oh I also have a real serious soft spot in my heart for these data overload aviator chronographs. I have no idea what half the shit means, but I love all that useless detail. The only downside is that you can be looking directly at your watch and not know what time it is.

I would make an exception for this superminimal watch.

yeah I really like that current wave of abstract, binary, whatever weirdo watches and especially all the absurdly colorful and mostly useless ones from TokyoFlash, but they just seem a little too easy.

I would make an exception for a Chromachron watch, though!

Oh I also like canteen watches, but others may hate them if they do lots of pushups since they have enormous crowns.

The only one I actually own is a Gruen Soviet, but I love that watch. Its strap is really weird because there's a little pocket/sleeve thing that you slide the excess end into.

I definitely enjoy a high contrast, easily read watch. There's a swiss army watch on sale at Pennywise today:

    www.pennywise.biz

Actually there's almost always a swiss army watch or two every day on watchdoddy.com

I wear some of the dumber and less easily read watches because it's more or less my only consistent accessory and I don't mind showing some sparkle, but if I was forced to put on the brakes and pick one watch for life, it would be a watch with a black face, white numbers, and some kind of contrast hands, preferably with a date window. it's not something I use a ton, but when it's there, I start to become more generally aware of the date all the time, which is definitely not the case otherwise.

Also, timely link... there's my timex!

Every now and then watchdoddy shows a flat sport watch that just has a big lcd display that looks like it's right in the rubber or something, basically like the whole thing is a flat rubber cuff... but I don't know how to describe that to google. The Breo Sport watch is the most minimal thing I can think of, though.

In the meantime, I'll just say that Mr. Jones does a really good job of making weirdo abstract watches that stand out from the pack.

This one was internet-famous for a minute, but this one sort of satisfies my earlier stated need for a chromachron.

the littlest one got a pretty good review in some article I read. I mean it's just a little digital clock like you'd get from a gumball machine or something, but I guess it holds up pretty well, and it's like the size of a ricky schroeder jelly bracelet, so it's not gonna slow you down when karate chopping.

Uncrate actually makes alot of good and interesting choices in their watches. Speaking of black, they showcased a black submariner a little while ago (an actual submariner, like by Rolex) plus the Lum-tec which is the current thing for people who want mercilessly glowing military watches that cost too much.

    Oh and THIS THING.

Also Swatch has a fun crossover with hardcore music because they made a severely coveted item for straightedgers of the 90s. I used to have the much more affordable knockoff sold by Revelation Records, but the strap broke off and I lost it.

zis is my watch but with a washed out grey-blue face. i've had 3 generations of this model of watch and killed both of the last two by wearing them in the ocean. oops.
