As part of my corporate role, I'll probably be hitting a party or two. I will not be attending any of the sessions.

I was so bummed, I casually mentioned wanting to go to SXSW to a manager on Friday, who asked when it was. I told them this month, which they replied, "bummer no time to organise it, maybe next year?"

Hrunting, If you're at a fun party, give me a call 614.388.8290.

Pete, I barely made it, this year. I just got tickets last Friday.

If my luck holds out, I managed to score a posh hotel right downtown too. I have a reservation number and everything, but I never believe hotels until I'm in the room.

I think I may have finally talked the powers that be into getting a booth next year.

My own fault for not even thinking about asking to go I suppose. Hopefully next year!

I went to SXSW one time. There was no Hrunting sighting at the time.

I can't believe how long ago that was, I think it was 2003. Didn't get much from the conference but had a good time.

Whenever my gamer friends get too big for their britches, I pull out the "I got a NPC named after me" card.

I never played the beta long enough to discover if there was a Sergeant Wookiee.

I hate SXSW time because I never get to go and it seems like everyone is constantly talking about it, and it's all just meaningless white noise to me because I'm not there. I pretty much stay away from Twitter during SXSW.

Blah blah web blah blah music blah blah austin.

That's pretty much what SXSW is to me.

I am not going to SXSW. I am, however, going to go to An Event Apart this year, so I got that going for me.

Last year, I ate a few Tijuana Dogs, drank a few gallons of Lone Star, went to Psychfest to see A Place To Bury Strangers (current favorite band), and watched an amazing Judas Priest cover band play as 2 audience members the size of trucks got into a fight.

The secret to a good time after hours during SXSWi is to hide your badge and hang with the locals.

Wow... amazingly cogent insight from Techcrunch. Who would've expected that?

I've really enjoyed Paul Carr since they added him to TechCrunch. I won't say the man's insightful, but he appeals to my tech cynicism. I was at one of the SXSWi parties he described last year. I think this conversation with a startup hawker babe sums it up:

HER: Hey, do you know about twatwatch?*
    ME: No, what is it?
HER: You can attach pictures to your tweets!
    ME: So it's like twitpic.
    HER: No, it's different!
    ME: It sounds like twitpic.
HER: But you can do (insert something not different here)
    ME: So it is twitpic
    HER: Yeah, but it's better!
ME: How are you going to make money?
HER: We'll figure that out later. What do you do?
    ME: I work for Giganews
    HER: What's Giganews?
    ME: A Usenet company.
    HER: What's it do?
    ME: Make money.

*That wasn't the real name, but it was something similar.

To be fair, though, I did find one good company at that party that we're still doing business with today, but also in fairness, they were at that party for the same reason I was: they knew one of the guys hosting it and came along for the ride. They weren't really selling and I wasn't really buying. It just worked out. I'm still not sure what people or companies get out of the conference itself, but hey, the money's good for the city, I guess.

While you're here, check out our new light rail system. I think all 500 feet of the track is right outside the Hilton at which the panels are being held.

Hey, I just recently signed up for a Giganews account in order to fulfill all of my TV watching needs. Does sharing a message board with you qualify for any kind of discount?

(You never know if you don't ask...)

In a word: Networking. In our business, it can take years for a contact to bear financial rewards, but it's always nice to meet someone who knows someone. It's also nice to run into clients and get a little face time.

Personally though, the best part is the validation. I always come back energized.

All my money goes to the Jackalope, Emo's, Hole in the Wall, and Kerbey Lane.
