has this ever NOT worked out for any of you?

i have been hosting a guy me and gay boyfriend have known for 3 years. 2 years ago the two of us and him and his (now ex) wife had talked about them visiting us for fun. well, we fell out of contact as their marriage was breaking up and by the time they got divorced we barely talked to either of them. then, a year later out of the blue logan and i get this huge email detailing his side of the divorce and ending with him asking if he could still visit us. we said "......yyyeah ok" about 8 months ago and so, the friend arrived last sunday. it has been frustrating. he was always fairly bitter but it's been dialed up to mach 10, he hates my cats even though I'm doing a reasonable amount to keep them away, he constantly talks about how his ex is the spawn of Satan (we know a lot of what he has been saying is not true, although I don't think he's lying, just selectively remembering), even though he knows we are both broke and very busy (we repeated that multiple times before he came up) he wants to drive 2-3-4 hours away to see things and wants us to buy gas for his rental car for it... he was absurdly hostile to my husband even though HE chose to come up a month after I got married? argh! by Wednesday night I was ready to go "Nice visit... why are you still here?"

I don't think this will change my tendency to say "sure!!!" when someone suggests crashing on my couch, because it's worked out many times before this and I'm the kind of only child that will share everything and anything, but.... bleh.

    What an asshole. I'm sorry.

It has never not worked out for me. Yet. Then again, I don't go out of my way to meet people so that certainly skews my results a bit.

I think the only one who didn't work out was a guy I met on MySpace? or something like it. He lives in Denver, and somehow we became friends online, had epic phone conversations for a while, and then he decided to come visit. It was the longest three days of my life. You can't know what someone's mannerisms are like until you meet them in person; this guy reminded me of the Chicken Lady from Kids in the Hall. UGH.

I did have a friend come visit when I lived in MN, someone I'd met once before and thought was great, but realized after a few days with her in my personal space that she was not someone I'd be friends with if I were around her all the time. That sort of sucked, too.

Otherwise, it's all been good. Mostly because I'm the one going to visit people and if it starts to suck I'm more than happy to rent a room and get the hell out of there.

It's been mostly fun to meet people. Almost all of my current close friends started out as message board pals. Including wife.

I've slept with 50% of the people I knew online and later met in person.

Then again I've only met Stilton and my wife, but I'm hoping to keep my average up.

When you put it into percentages, you remind me of a guy I know with a Craigslist addiction.

I'm kind of happy to learn my visit with Paige doesn't rank as her top worst. She introduced me to Chipotle on that trip and for that I forever love her.

I think I will go with my intuition in the future, as in, if I don't immediately go "YAY!!!" at the thought of meeting someone I just won't bother with it.

I can honestly say this guy was the first person I've ever met who ate donuts for breakfast regularly. who the fuck does that? I offered to make way more breakfast than I normally eat every morning (bacon, homefries, eggs) and he always chose donuts. disgusting...

No, I'm confused with someone else.

    Pete was cool.

I thought you were Pete. ?

Pretty much everyone's been great. My experience trends more toward having an acquaintance who is totally cool to be around, but who has a completely noxious online presence.

Wil don't you recall when we merged into some kind of Voltron like creature back in 2007 for 6 months? We fought crime, with sarcasm!

I can't recall a single person I've met in RL from online I didn't get on with. I suppose I should count myself lucky.

People I met from the "old" internet (like usenet and IRC and stuff when I was in college) tended to be pretty seriously hit and miss. no doubt alot of them think the same of me. they met me at a weird time.

Well, it sounds like I'll have the opportunity to test the theories/experiences at least once or twice more this year; Nicolas is coming to P-Town first week of April, and I'm planning to head up to Vancouver, BC to visit with Hessie at the end of May. Woohoo!

    Remember:
    Messy hair
    Wild eyes
    Point with a shaky finger
    Shriek "GET OFF MY COUUUUCCHHHHH!"

This works best, if it's your introduction.

    I was thinking:
    Wild Hair
    Blazing eyes
Pound the floor with a staff
    Bellow: "GET OFF MY COUUUUCCHHHHH!"

I'm thinking he could make it so that it would hotlink a thumbnail off of youtube's servers and turn it into a link.
